Microsoft Windows 8 - Configuring: System Management and Recovery

Overview/Description
This course deals with remote management tools provided in Windows 8, which allow IT professionals to access and manage desktops and servers from a remote location. Alongside Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop, Windows 8 provides the Windows Remote Management (WinRM) service which implements the WS-Management protocol for remote management of Windows 8 clients. The WinRM service is a self-contain remote management tool, but it also serves as the foundation for PowerShell remote management, which provides a more convenient platform for managing remote computers on the network. In addition to the other remote tools, the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) application includes many snap-ins that provide the option to manage local or remote services running on network computers. Also covered in the course are two new system restore utilities – System Refresh and System Reset. System Refresh is a non-destructive system and data restoration tool, that reinstalls the Windows 8 operating system, user data, and any metro applications. Used in tandem with a reference system image, refresh can also reinstall third party applications. System Reset is a destructive Windows 8 operating system reinstallation tool. The Advanced Boot Option menu has also been modified for Windows 8 and the Shadow Copy feature of Shared folders has been deprecated – Windows 8 administrators now rely on the revised System Restore feature, to revert a complete system to a previously known good working condition. Windows PowerShell 3.0 is discussed, providing an overview of the command-line shell and scripting language designed for Windows operating system administration and control. Windows 8 PowerShell allows administrators and power users to control and automate the management of the Windows 8 operating system. Centered on PowerShell modules and commands (cmdlets), the PowerShell console and the new PowerShell Integrated Scripting Environment (ISE) let you manage the computers in your enterprise from the command line. This course applies to objectives of the 70-687: Configuring Windows 8 exam of the MCSA: Windows 8 designation.
